Sleep Disorders & Insomnia — Frequently Asked Questions

CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I) is now recommended by sleep medicine bodies as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia — ahead of medication — because it addresses the underlying thought and behaviour patterns that maintain poor sleep rather than just the symptoms. Many people achieve lasting improvement with CBT-I where medication has only provided temporary relief. Neurofeedback is also used at MasterMind to directly regulate the sleep-wake cycle as an adjunct.
No. Sleep hygiene (consistent bedtime, no screens, dark room etc.) is useful but it's only the surface layer. CBT-I goes deeper — addressing the anxious relationship with sleep itself, the hyperarousal that keeps the brain activated at night, and the unhelpful thought patterns that develop around sleeplessness. Most people who come to us have already tried the basics. That's exactly where counselling picks up.
Often both are involved. Poor sleep has physiological and psychological components that interact — anxiety about not sleeping activates the nervous system, which makes sleep harder, which increases anxiety, and so on. Even where there's a physical component (pain, sleep apnoea, hormonal changes), addressing the psychological layer almost always improves outcomes. We work collaboratively with your GP where medical factors are relevant.
CBT-I is typically delivered in 6 to 8 sessions, and many people see meaningful improvement within that time. Some clients experience a temporary dip in sleep before it improves — this is normal and expected in certain CBT-I protocols. Your counsellor will prepare you for what to expect and track progress session by session.
