Personality Disorders — Frequently Asked Questions

Our senior counsellors have experience working with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), and other cluster B and cluster C presentations. Approaches used include DBT (which has the strongest evidence base for BPD), IFS, EMDR, and Schema Therapy-informed work.
Yes — particularly with DBT and other evidence-based approaches. Research consistently shows that BPD symptoms in particular improve significantly with treatment, and that many people with personality disorder diagnoses go on to lead stable, fulfilling lives. The label can feel permanent but the prognosis with good treatment is genuinely hopeful.
Absolutely. You don't need to accept a diagnosis to benefit from support. Many of the skills built in DBT — distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness — are valuable regardless of diagnostic category. We'll work with your actual experience rather than starting from a label.
Supporting someone with a personality disorder can be exhausting and confusing. Individual counselling for family members and partners is valuable in its own right — helping you understand the dynamics, protect your own wellbeing, set sustainable boundaries, and navigate the relationship more effectively. You don't need to be the identified patient to benefit from support.
