Understanding the Science of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex conditions that involve a distorted body image, unhealthy eating behaviors, and a preoccupation with weight and shape. They can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, biology, and psychological factors.

Hope and Healing - Treating Eating Disorders

Our team in North Vancouver and West Vancouver provides trauma-informed, compassionate support for eating disorders — addressing the emotional, relational, and psychological patterns underneath the eating behaviour rather than focusing on food alone. We use CBTEMDR Therapy (particularly where the eating disorder is rooted in trauma or shame), Mindfulness Therapy, and IFS. We work collaboratively with GPs and dietitians where a coordinated team approach is clinically appropriate.

Eating Disorders — Frequently Asked Questions

Our counsellors support clients navigating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder), orthorexia, and disordered eating that doesn't fit a specific diagnosis but is significantly affecting quality of life. Treatment is trauma-informed and compassionate.
For mild to moderate presentations, counselling can be highly effective as the primary intervention. For more severe eating disorders — particularly where there are medical risks related to weight or purging behaviour — a coordinated team including a physician and sometimes a dietitian is important. We will always discuss safety openly and refer appropriately. We work collaboratively with other providers where relevant.
This is a very common concern and a valid one. Skilled eating disorder counselling doesn't involve prescriptive food talk or meal planning — it addresses the emotional, relational, and psychological drivers underneath the eating behaviour. Most clients find that as those drivers are understood and addressed, their relationship with food shifts naturally. Your counsellor will follow your lead on what feels safe to explore.
Yes. Family members often carry significant distress themselves and benefit from their own support. We can also provide psychoeducation for families — helping you understand what your loved one is experiencing, how to communicate in ways that help rather than harm, and how to care for yourself through a difficult time.
