Depression — Frequently Asked Questions

Depression is more than feeling sad or going through a rough patch. Key signs include persistent low mood most days, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, low energy, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness lasting more than two weeks. If you're unsure, a free 15-minute consultation with one of our counsellors is a good starting point — there's no obligation and no diagnosis required to begin.
Counselling — particularly CBT and EMDR — is a well-established, evidence-based treatment for depression and is often recommended as a first-line approach. Neurofeedback can also support mood regulation as an adjunct. Many people recover fully with counselling alone. Others benefit from a combination of counselling and medication, particularly for more severe episodes. We work collaboratively with your GP when appropriate.
This varies considerably depending on the nature and severity of the depression, how long it has been present, and what's driving it. Some clients see meaningful improvement within 8 to 12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work, particularly where depression is tied to trauma, relationship patterns, or longstanding beliefs about oneself. Your counsellor will discuss a realistic timeline with you after an initial assessment.
Yes — in fact, depression frequently occurs alongside anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, grief, and other conditions. Our counsellors are trained to work with complex presentations and will tailor their approach to your full picture rather than treating depression in isolation.
