Couples Counselling — Frequently Asked Questions

There's no single right time — couples come to counselling at all stages, from early conflict patterns they want to address before things escalate, to long-standing disconnection, to recovering after a breach of trust. Research from the Gottman Institute suggests that couples wait an average of six years after problems begin before seeking help. Earlier is almost always better.
The Gottman Method is one of the most rigorously researched approaches to couples therapy, developed over decades of studying what makes relationships succeed or fail. It focuses on strengthening friendship, managing conflict constructively, and building shared meaning. Our clinic director Maryam Mills is trained in Gottman Method Levels 1 and 2, and all of our counsellors hold Gottman training as well.
It helps if both partners are willing to engage, but it's not uncommon for one partner to be more hesitant than the other at the start. A skilled counsellor can work with that dynamic. If your partner is reluctant, individual counselling focused on your relationship can also be a valuable starting point.
Many extended health plans cover sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). We direct bill eight providers and can provide receipts for others. Couples sessions are typically billed at the same rate as individual sessions. Check your plan details or contact us and we can help clarify what may be covered.
