At Mastermind, we are always aiming to be knowledgeable on newly published research that can benefit our mental health clinic. Our team is committed to constantly improving our practices to benefit our client’s well-beings. Neurofeedback therapy is one of the many services we offer that is specifically tailored to your own individualistic needs. It is used to alleviate the symptoms of a variety of conditions such as, but also not limited to, anxiety, autism, depression, trauma, addiction and stress. More specifically, stress is a rather common physiological response that majority of people in the community face and there is some insightful research that dives into this topic in the context of neurofeedback therapy.
An article by Hafeez et al., reveals that video games, in neurofeedback therapy, was more effective in promoting stress mitigation when compared to an audio or video stimuli alone. In this study, participants were able to bring files of either their own music or videos to be engaged in during their training sessions. Therefore, the content was engaging and liked by each participant. The increased efficacy in the use of video games may be due to more cognitive engagement that games require, when there is a clear task to be achieved (i.e., excelling in the game). This research indicates how the various stimuli presented during neurofeedback training does matter.
What is the added value here?
- Consider incorporating more use of video games during your neurofeedback training
– While it is not necessary to use video games during every training session, consider increasing its use to get more out of your neurofeedback therapy training sessions
– Note: this study was conducted on university students therefore, the results may vary with people of different age groups
- It is important to be engaged in the content you’re watching or listening to during your neurofeedback training
– Be sure to let your neurofeedback technician know if there are certain video topics you enjoy watching or if there are specific games you prefer to be engaged in.
