The Role of QEEG and Brain Mapping in Mental Health and Performance

At our clinic, we believe that true healing begins with understanding the whole person- mind, body, and brain. One of the most cutting-edge tools we use to support our clients is quantitative EEG (qEEG) brain mapping. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, ADHD, depression, trauma, or simply looking to optimize your mental performance, qEEG can provide valuable insights into how your brain functions and how it can function better.

What is qEEG?

qEEG, or quantitative electroencephalography, is a non-invasive method that measures electrical activity in the brain. Brainwave data is recorded and then analyzed with powerful software to identify patterns, strengths, and dysregulations in brain activity.

It’s like getting a “map” of how your brain communicates- where it may be overactive, underactive, or not well synchronized. This is why it’s often referred to as a brain map.

Why Brain Mapping?

Just like a doctor wouldn’t prescribe medication without first running some tests, we believe that targeted mental health treatment begins with accurate information. A brain map gives us objective data that can complement what you share in session.

Here’s what qEEG brain mapping helps us do:

  • Identify patterns linked to anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, and more

  • Determine how different areas of your brain are functioning

  • Create personalized neurofeedback protocols tailored to your unique brain

  • Track changes and improvements over time

What Happens During a Brain Mapping Session?

  1. Preparation: You’ll sit comfortably while a cap with sensors is placed on your head. The process is completely painless and non-invasive.

  2. Recording: We’ll ask you to relax with your eyes closed and then open for around 10 minutes each while we record your brainwaves.

  3. Analysis: The data is then compared to a normative database to highlight any deviations from typical brain activity.

  4. Review: We’ll schedule a follow-up session to go over your brain map together and discuss the next steps in your treatment plan.

How qEEG Supports Neurofeedback and Counselling

qEEG doesn’t just help us see what’s going on- it helps us act. By understanding your unique brain patterns, we can develop a neurofeedback training protocol designed specifically for your needs. This leads to more precise, effective, and often faster results.

For example:

  • A client with ADHD might show underactivity in the frontal lobes- training can target that region to improve focus.

  • Someone with anxiety may have excessive fast-wave activity- protocols can help calm an overactive nervous system.

Since we pair neurofeedback with compassionate, client-centered counselling, we’re able to support both the neurobiological and emotional sides of healing.

Who Can Benefit?

qEEG brain mapping is safe for children, teens, and adults. It’s particularly helpful for those dealing with:
